Whoever invented the Spring Break should be given a Nobel Prize. It’s that one time of the year when we’re allowed to loosen up and just have fun. There are just so many places to visit during your Spring Break, but if you’re smart, you’ll book a flight to one of these 7 prime destinations.

Miami

Nothing screams Spring Break more than the beach. Miami’s long strip is definitely not a sleepy spot especially at this time of the year. In fact, Miami probably doesn’t wait around for the Spring Break to happen. It’s a hot party spot all-year-round. If you want to see and be seen, don’t miss out on the South Beach or So Be. Just take note that Miami is also known as the place where the beach is just as lovely as the people you’ll see on the beach so you might want to shape up.

Enjoy great dining and clubbing spots when you find yourself in this part of the world. The culture is also very interesting on this strip. Spot a group of Cubans just chilling in the sun, or rich locals tanning their already perfectly tanned bodies. Check out the cocktail mixes of the most popular clubs here and make sure you’re with your own brand of poison as you watch the beautiful Miami sunset.

Amsterdam

If you want to get a taste of true freedom, you might want to visit Amsterdam. Notorious for its “live and let live” motto, the city legally allows controversial and supposedly illegal acts like smoking weed and even prostitution as long as it doesn’t harm any of its denizens. As a result, Amsterdam also has one of the world’s richest art scenes. With its residents able to think freely on their toes, expression at its highest form is celebrated.

What Spring Breakers love about the city, though is not the diverse art scene as much as the leniency of life in general. It’s true that while drug and alcohol trafficking is legal, it’s still regulated, but compared to other parts of the world, the leash is pretty lose here. The drinking age is 16 opposed to other countries’ 18- or 21-year-old brackets. There are also about 1,000 bridges and 160 canals to explore on your lazy days when you just want a quick boat ride or a stroll across the country.

San Diego

This city can probably be considered a Spring Break haven with enough sprinkling of beaches, its mild climate at this time of the year, and its scenic downtown streets. If you’re travelling with kids, it would probably be a good idea to drop by SeaWorld. There are also plenty of beach bars for good but cheap eats by the sea. Come night time, San Diego bustles to life especially at the Pacific Beach where the club scene is simply happening. Explore Garnett and Grand Avenue for the best clubs in the area.

If you want a more posh evening out with a date, you might want to go downtown to the Gaslamp Quarter. Hipsters also flock the rooftop of the W hotel with its famous Beach Bar. No stilettos necessary for the ladies in this hot spot. You can wear your flip flops or be more daring by being barefoot. You might also want to go to San Diego’s actual beaches and start a bonfire. These are the best spots in the city for a booze fest.

Koh Phangan, Thailand

If you’ve frequented Thailand during the Spring Break in the past, you might have gone to more popular beaches like Phuket and Koh Samui. These days, though, you’ll probably get more bang for your buck at the Koh Phangan island. Try to book your stay during their Full Moon Parties and join 30,000 moon-worshippers at the beach. Don’t think this would look like a cult, though. Techno music is the craze during these Full Moon Parties, and you get to dance barefoot with your glow sticks in hand. If you can’t book a flight to catch these world-famous parties, don’t worry. You can still get the same experience at their New Age beachfront cafes. What’s the best part about coming here? The beer is cheap and the beaches are really pretty.

Dominican Republic

Spring Break is all about having fun, but no one really wants to bust their pockets while they’re travelling. The Dominican Republic is fast becoming a favouring among Spring Breakers because of the enticing package deals offered by airlines and travel agencies. The other reason is that it’s in the Caribbean, and who doesn’t want to be in this part of the world at the most ideal time of the year? While you get to enjoy pristine, white sand beaches, the night life here is far from dull. There are Vegas-style casinos, impressive and highly cosmopolitan night clubs, and resorts built to please both families travelling with kids and all-adult groups. You can go horseback riding, golfing, diving, and surfing while you’re here, too. There’s never a dull moment in this Spring Break hot spot.

Gulf Coast

If you want to give back this Spring Break, then you should definitely consider going to the Gulf Coast this summer. There is plenty of work to be done after 2005’s Hurricane Katrina hit, and the BP oil spill in 2010. Simply contact Historic Green (www.historicgreen.com) and see how you can help the organization. This used to be one of the most beautiful spots on Earth, and it would be great if you can help to resuscitate it. After a hard days’ work, there are also plenty of jazz bars to frequent in the city. It’s a more noble way of spending the Spring Break.

Montreal

With everyone flying off to the south for the Spring Break, you might want to go the unbeaten path and explore Montreal. This is just off the border of Canada, and it’s a good place for gambling and booze fest. You’ll have to be over 18 years old to enjoy what this city has to offer. If you came here with your school buddies on a road trip, you might want to take the road pilgrimage along the East Coast. You’ll find plenty of night clubs here—some of them bordering on the very naughty. If a sophisticated Spring Break is more to your liking, Montreal also has a lot to offer for the highly cultured. Check out the Mont-Royal, or go for the city’s posh ski resorts up the mountains.

Keukenhof, Netherlands

You might not be familiar with this area between Amsterdam and the Hague in Netherlands, but Nothing screams spring more than a field full of tulips, though, and this is the best place to see them. Aside from tulips, Keukenhof is also home to a multitude of spring flowers, and it is undoubtedly the best spot in Europe to be in during spring if you’ve come for the scenery alone. If you like your scenery polished, frequent the area’s best gardens. There’s plenty of bulbs in the wild, too, if you want a more rustic taste of this Dutch territory.

Northern India

In India, they celebrate “Holi” or the coming of Spring, and it’s certainly one of the world’s most colorful festivals for the season. Aside from much eye-candying during the festivities, you would also appreciate the essence of the celebrations, as locals welcome the triumph of goodness over evil.

You will want to bring your camera as you explore the streets of Nepal and other areas of Northern India, but make sure your gear is water- and possibly shock-proof. Don’t wear anything you’re scared of ruining too. This celebration of colors is more than just a light show. You may be splattered with paint, colored water, or colored chalk even if you’re safely on the sidelines.

Bluebell Woods, England

If you’re an English local, then you must know the bluebell woods in England like the back of your hand. This is a very popular spot during the springtime because of the number of bluebells growing like grass in the area. The vibrant color of the flowers is easily Britain’s clue that winter has passed and the season of love is here again. Most of the people who come here are photographers, out to get some unique pastoral shots. It’s also a good spot for a family picnic and afternoon out.

There are plenty of bluebell spots in the country, but you don’t have to reinvent the wheel just to find them. You may contact the Woodland Trust for their exact locations. Just in case you can’t wait for the bluebells to bloom, you might want to give the woods a visit anyway and spot snowdrops in full bloom. These pretty white flowers are the fitting prelude to the England’s famous blue blooms.

Hong Kong’s Lantern Festival

While half of the world’s population is probably flying off to Hong Kong for this spring’s lantern festival, it’s still worth a try. Watch and join locals as they let go of thousands of paper lanterns in the night sky. Hopefully, the spring climate would remain mild and clear, and no rain would get in the way of your lantern-lit skies. What’s the best part of this festival? If you watched Tangled with your kids, you’ll know how special this festival of lights is. Spring is also the season of love, so if you’re traveling with a special someone to Hong Kong, lighting up a lantern and wishing for your future together would be an extremely romantic gesture.

El Castillo, Chichen Itza, Mexico

If you want to get to know Spring more, you can go deeper than just admiring the pretty parades of colors and lights. You can go to Chichen Itza, Mexico, and marvel at how advanced our Mayan forefathers were at their time. Each Spring, El Castillo in Chichen Itza drives droves and droves of travelers to look at the marvels of this giant pyramid. From March 18 to 22 of this year, you will be able to witness the descent of Kukulcan, the Mayans’ snake deity. Of course, we’re not really looking at a deity, but at the genius behind the construction of this pyramid.

The alignment of the sun and the positioning of the pyramid allows for the formation of feathered serpent shadows on El Castillo’s northern staircase. For the terribly scientific, the magical quality of the shadow play might be overlooked, but no one can deny how well the Mayans artfully manipulated the Spring Equinox.

Cherry blossoms in Japan

One of the most iconic festivals during the Springtime is probably the Cherry Blossom Festival in Japan. Aside from the beauty of the cherry trees at this time of the year, also a sight to behold are the colorful kimonos adorned by Japanese men and women. Fireworks usually follow at night and there are night markets during this festival. Most travelers frequent Japan during this time of the year to experience the country’s strong cultural roots. There are also numerous other blooms to admire aside from cherry blossoms.

Beltane Festival, Edinburgh

If you plan to celebrate Spring by exploring the pagan roots of your forefathers, festivities can’t get more pagan than the Beltane in Edinburgh. This is held annually at the Carlton Hill every April 30, and you can expect rituals celebrating fertility. Bonfire dances, drum poundings, the procession of the May Queen and the Green Man, and spectacular fire displays are bound to wow you during these festivities.

Naghol in the Pentecost Island, Vanuatu

If you want to know what inspired bungee-jumping in the past, the answer is the Naghol or land diving ritual in the Pentecost Island. This ritual is practiced by locals entering manhood. It is also held to give thanks to the island’s rich yam harvest during this time of the year. A tower is usually built out of yam trees, and liana vines are tied to their ankles. Participants have their heads just grazing the ground. No outsiders are allowed to perform the ritual, and guests must be very respectable while witnessing the Naghol.

“Black Sun” in Denmark

If you want a somewhat eerie but beautiful experience of Spring, you should go to Denmark’s Tonder Marsh. Over one million birds migrate here during the spring, blocking out the sun, and creating the “Black Sun” effect in the sky. This usually occurs during mid-March or mid-April, and you can witness this during the sunset. Birds don’t follow the human calendar, though, so if you want a close to 100% sure sighting of the phenomenon, it’s best to consult a guide.

Mardi Gras in Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans

Of course, everyone knows that Spring is also the time for Mardi Gras—that wild street party which has everyone on a booze fest. This celebration is held globally to celebrate “the pleasures of the flesh” before the Lenten Season begins. The best street parties, however, are in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Pack your best costume in your backpack, and make sure you’re prepared to drink your heart to its merriest.

Fares expected to soar through summer

Don't expect relief from high gasoline prices by flying to your spring break vacation. Airfares already are up this year, and every sign is they'll remain high for summer vacation, too.

The same $100-plus price tag on a barrel of crude oil that's driving up prices at the pump is pushing up the price of jet fuel, prompting airlines to raise ticket prices across their systems twice since the start of the year.

The result is fares that were 4% higher Thursday than on New Year's Day, Rick Seaney, chief executive of FareCompare.com, which closely monitors prices, calculates.

"Even at the $4.48 (per gallon pump price) I paid a week ago, it was still less expensive than flying," says Lou DeLuco, who drives twice a month from his home in Phoenix for business in Los Angeles in a 2004 Malibu.

Gasoline was at $3.80 a gallon nationally on average Tuesday, according to AAA, although it's above $4 in places such as California.

The national average is edging toward the July 2008 peak of $4.11, when crude oil hit $145 a barrel before the financial collapse, according to the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Airlines, with jet fuel making up about 35% of operating costs, are in the same situation as drivers when crude oil prices rise.

Last year, airlines paid an average of about $3 a gallon for kerosene-type jet fuel. That was the highest average in decades, according to the Energy Information Administration. Last week, the price hit $3.20 a gallon.

"Fuel remains our largest and most volatile cost," says John Heimlich, chief economist for Airlines for America, the trade industry group representing the nation's biggest airlines.

U.S. airlines spent about $50.5 billion last year on fuel, up from $38.8 billion in 2010, and they raised ticket prices nine times last year, largely to offset those costs and make a profit. All major U.S. airlines except American, which sought bankruptcy protection in November, posted a profit last year .

But Southwest Airlines, the most consistently profitable U.S. carrier, said Tuesday that high fuel prices will keep it from posting a profit for the first three months of this year.

Strategizing on costs

To protect themselves against jumps in oil prices, most airlines hedge against them by buying a sort of insurance called an option. These options allow airlines to lock in a price for a portion of their fuel for several months at today's prices. So long as prices rise, options are valuable in keeping prices more stable. But if prices remain flat or fall, options are another expense for airlines.

US Airways hasn't hedged its fuel buying for years. And Frontier, after hedging last year, isn't following that strategy so far this year.

Bryan Bedford, chief executive of Republic Airways, which owns Frontier, said in a March 1 earnings call that Frontier could have "really good margins" if fuel averaged $3.30 a gallon this year and could still be profitable at $3.50 per gallon.

"It's going to remain to be seen what happens with fuel prices and fare adjustments," Bedford says.

Key to the airlines' profitability during times of surging oil prices is that they continue to balance supply and demand by not expanding the number of flights they have beyond people's willingness to fly — and pay for it.

Dealing with high fares

Airline tickets will be pricey this year, but travel industry analysts have some advice for dealing with them.

Plan ahead. Try to buy several months ahead of time for trips inside the USA and as much as five months ahead for international travel.

Watch for sales. Even with high ticket prices, airlines will have spot sales to fill seats on planes flying some routes. Sales tend to start on Tuesday and end by Thursday.

Be flexible. Spring prices should ease after Easter until Memorial Day. Vacation-time fares from June through early August will be more expensive. Prices are expected to drop after school starts in late August, especially for tickets to Europe. When the London Olympics end Aug. 12, ticket prices could plunge several hundred dollars for a September or October trip.

Try different cities. Seek less-expensive destinations. For Europe, rather than flying into London or Paris, consider Barcelona, Dublin or Zurich.

Planes were 83% full last year, according to the federal Bureau of Transportation Statistics, as airlines adjusted the number of seats they made available by the number of flights they scheduled and the size of aircraft they flew on routes. Planes were 69% full in 2001.

To keep planes full, says Michael Derchin, an airline analyst for CRT Capital Group, the airlines reduced capacity, or supply of seats, in the fall.

"So far, demand has been pretty strong," Derchin says.

For demand to stay strong, business travelers need to continue to fly. They are the most lucrative group of travelers because they're willing to pay higher ticket prices to fly in business and first class, and they'll pay a premium to fly at the last moment.

Business travelers aren't cutting back on travel in large numbers — yet.

But if fares continue to rise, Kevin Mitchell, chairman of the Business Travel Coalition, which represents corporate travel managers, says he thinks the situation could change toward the end of the year.

Carol Powell, 55, of Colts Neck, N.J., already is concerned about the prospect.

Powell, who works on environmental issues for a large corporation, says the business-class tickets to Brazil that she bought two weeks ago for a trip at the end of this month were $8,300 instead of the usual $7,000.

"I'm going to have a hard time with my budget this year," she says.

"I'm going to take the trips I need to take, and then at some point, I'll have to stop because I'll be out of money."

If people want to fly for vacation this summer, Tom Parsons of BestFares.com says, they need to be patient.

He advises people to look into a window from April 9 through early June in which there'll be a bit of a break in fares.

For travel later in the year, he says to look in the next few months to travel to Europe after the London Olympics close Aug. 12.

"The game this year is going to be, play within the airfare sales," Parsons says. "If you try to buy a summer deal right now, I think you'd be dollar-foolish."

Seeking alternatives

Down the line, airlines want to wean themselves from high crude oil price jumps and use alternative fuel, perhaps made from sweet sorghum, grasses or trees.

Biofuels would reduce carbon emissions from fossil fuel that are increasingly penalized, such as through a European carbon-trading plan that charges airlines for a portion of the fuel that they burn.

Airlines, manufacturers such as Boeing and airports joined with the Agriculture Department in 2006 to develop biofuels.

The goal is to grow a fuel, have it work in a plane and be available at airports for airlines to rely upon.

The Air Force spurred the process by setting a goal that half its fuel be from something other than petroleum by 2016. An F/A-18 Super Hornet flew with half biofuel in April 2010, and a Seahawk helicopter powered by half biofuel flew in September 2011.

United and Alaska airlines flew the first commercial biofuel flights in the United States in November 2011.

"We don't want to be the only industry left behind with no alternative," says Heimlich of Airlines for America.

But the day of flying routinely on fuel made from plants is years away, because suppliers are still developing the fuels and airlines are still testing them to ensure they're safe.

Staying high; costs, that is

In the meantime, consumers should be prepared to pay more to fly unless the price of oil drops, and the Federal Aviation Administration doesn't see that happening. The FAA predicts oil prices will stay above $100 a barrel this year and shoot up to $138 in the next 20 years.

Oil's price volatility is preventing even some experts from predicting where prices will go the rest of the year.

"You can bet that if oil goes up by some substantial amount because of geopolitical issues or because of shortages, you're going to have to raise the price of tickets," says Bob McAdoo, who analyzes airlines for Avondale Partners investors.

Right now, Farecompare's Seaney predicts that summer prices will be "expensive — but not overly expensive."

But he says, "At the end of the day, it'll be potential travelers who control prices by making the big decision to fly or stay at home."

Disney Cruise Line christens Disney Fantasy in New York

Disney Cruise Line christened its fourth ship, Disney Fantasy, during a star-studded christening celebration March 1 at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal in New York City. The event included performances by Jerry Seinfeld, Neil Patrick Harris, Nick Cannon and Heather Headley, but godmother was singer Mariah Carey. Similar to the New Year’s Eve celebrations in Times Square, Carey led the audience in a countdown that triggered a 6-foot-tall bottle of champagne in the Atrium Lobby to erupt and shower onlookers with confetti and streamers as a traditional bottle of champagne broke against the ship’s hull.

The Disney Fantasy will sail from Port Canaveral on seven-night Caribbean itineraries that alternate Eastern (St. Maarten and St. Thomas) and Western (Grand Cayman, Costa Maya, Cozumel). All itineraries will include a stop at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay.

The Muppets are featured onboard in an interactive quest to find missing show props. The AquaDuck is a 765-foot long water coaster. New features include AquaLab, a water play area for kids, and a new respite for adults called Satellite Falls.

Two new Broadway-style shows include “Wishes,” a 45-minute musical about three best friends, and “Disney’s Aladdin — A Musical Spectacular.”

Free Admission to National Parks

Royal Caribbean’s Monarch of the Seas Fails Nov. 18 Health Inspection

Royal Caribbean International’s Monarch of the Seas failed a health inspection on Nov. 18 with a score of 85. The list of infractions included food stored at incorrect temperatures, soiled dishes, missing safety signs, and fruit flies near preparation and serving areas.

The Centers for Disease Control’s Vessel Sanitation Program rules that a score of 86 or higher is viewed as “satisfactory,” while 85 and lower is “unsatisfactory.” On its last inspection, on July 8, Monarch of the Seas scored a 97.

“At Royal Caribbean International we have high health standards for all our guests and crew,” the company responded. “Therefore, we are extremely disappointed to learn that Monarch of the Seas only received a score of 85 during its last inspection conducted by United States Public Health (USPH). Over the last four years, Monarch of the Seas has not scored lower than 95 on any of her most recent eight inspections. Additionally, our recent fleet average score is over 97.

“Royal Caribbean is working closely with USPH to correct and remedy the deficiencies found aboard Monarch of the Seas that caused the low score. We have already submitted our corrective action report for the USPH inspection to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We are confident that Monarch of the Seas will receive a passing score when the ship is re-inspected, which we expect will take place within the next few weeks.”

Change of travel plans? There’s a fee for that

Changing your mind, your plans and your tickets is increasingly costly for travelers, and more lucrative for travel businesses. But new airline passenger rights go into effect Jan. 12, which allow travelers to hold a reservation without payment or to cancel it without a penalty for 24 hours after the reservation is made.

For travel plans, buy-right-now seems utterly inappropriate. Booking plane tickets in particular brings with it so many other considerations: Can you get a hotel room for those dates? Can the other members of your group travel those particular days and times? Will someone be available to take you to the airport for that departure time? Have you forgotten that you need to be at work, or that you already have tickets to a concert on one of those days?

They allow travelers to hold a reservation without payment or to cancel it without a penalty for 24 hours after the reservation is made, if the reservation is made more than a week before the flight’s departure date.

Norwegian Spirit to Host Rascal Flatts Concert

Here’s one for the country fans: On March 2, while NCL’s Norwegian Spirit is docked in Cozumel, chart-topping country act Rascal Flatts will perform an intimate acoustic performance on board, its first ever on a cruise ship. The concert will take place during Spirit's February 26, 2012, western Caribbean cruise from New Orleans.

To promote the performance (and the band), radio stations in more than 20 major US and Canadian markets are holding on-air contests whose top prize is tickets for the 7-night cruise, VIP tickets to the concert, a meet-and-greet with the band, and airfare to New Orleans. Regular passengers booked on the ship can attend the concert too — for a price. NCL is offering a VIP package for $150 per person that gets the ticket-holder into a private cocktail reception where they can meet and have their photo taken with the band, and get an autographed souvenir. Standard tickets are available for $50 per person and guarantee a seat in the ship’s Stardust Theater for the concert. Back in September, Windstar wowed us with renderings of the new look it intended to put in place aboard its three ships. The refurb is the first half of a planned two-part renovation, targeting the ship’s staterooms, suites, bridge suites, and corridors. A second round, to take place in fall 2012, will transform the ship’s public spaces, including the Lounge, Restaurant, alternative restaurant Degrees, Veranda buffet restaurant, Compass Rose bar, WindSpa, and Pool Bar.

Wind Surf is already back in service, offering a season of eastern Caribbean sailings. Fleetmates Wind Star and Wind Spirit will undergo similar complete refurbishments of staterooms, owner’s suite, corridors, and public spaces following their respective Costa Rica and Caribbean winter seasons. Afterward, both ships will begin their Mediterranean seasons, Wind Spirit starting April 15, 2012, and Wind Star beginning April 29, 2012.

Seven National Parks you never heard of....

On November 7, Great Falls in Paterson, New Jersey, became the latest addition to the national park family. After a long fight by Paterson residents and officials to have the 77-foot waterfall recognized, their dreams were fulfilled -- partially -- by Monday's agreement. There remain years of work to mold Great Falls around National Park Service standards, but the will, and the funds, can now be brought fully to bear on the project.

When Ulysses S. Grant declared Yellowstone the country's first national park in 1872, early conservationists could have only dreamed of the vast network of protected areas that grace America's states and territories today. Less than 140 years after Yellowstone's induction, the National Park Service now operates 397 parks and monuments.
Great Falls might be years away from completion, but visitors have 396 other options to explore in the meantime. And there's no better time for a park jaunt than this Veterans Day weekend, when over 100 national parks will waive their entrance fees. From November 11-13, explorers can enjoy the beauty and history of national parks from Florida to Hawaii at no charge. (Many other national parks are free throughout the year.)

No doubt many visitors will take advantage of this largesse to visit Yellowstone, the Everglades and other crown jewels of the Park Service, but there are worlds of wonder beyond the well-trodden path. Why not take a chance on one of the Park Service's more unusual and lesser-visited locales? Check out the following:

Dry Tortugas, Florida. Hot and remote, the Dry Tortugas are one of the Park Service's most inaccessible destinations. One thing they aren't is dry; the seven islands lying seventy miles west of Key West received their name from their lack of terrestrial fresh water (and an abundance of turtles), but tropical storms inundate the little archipelago with some regularity. Visitors must take a ferry or seaplane to the park, but the reward is worth it: renowned for its marine life and snorkeling, the Dry Tortugas offer clean beaches and clear water, as well as an historic American fortress to explore. Best of all, you probably won't have to share it with many other people.

Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Memorial, Philadelphia. The Park Service isn't exactly modest in its holdings: from the Grand Canyon, to California's Sequoia National Park, to Wrangell--St. Elias in Alaska (the reigning champ at over eight million acres), it has its share of massive parks. But these spaces contain enough to fill a lifetime, so they might not be the best choice for a weekend trip. If you're not up for getting lost in a vast wilderness, why not go to the opposite extreme and visit the smallest destination in the NPS? Commemorating the life of an American Revolutionary hero, this National Memorial includes exhibits and artifacts from Kosciuszko's military career in the new country he helped to liberate. Housed within Kosciuszko's small Philadelphia home and measuring in at only .02 acres, the memorial is perfect for a quick historical tour.

Aniakchak, Alaska. Only serious adventurers need apply for an expedition to Aniakchak, a swath of land in southwest Alaska encompassing the volcano that gives the park its name. Extreme weather, a rugged, remote landscape and various other inconveniences -- like bears -- have earned Aniakchak its place as the very bottom rung of the NPS popularity ladder, but the natural riches of wild Alaska are a pot of gold for the few willing to seek out the end of this rainbow. Sure, by the Park Service's own estimates only a few dozen people make it out to Aniakchak each year, but what an unforgettable experience those determined few must have.

African Burial Ground, New York. From frontier Alaska to the glittering streets of New York, the National Park Service spans all environs. On the opposite end of the spectrum from Aniakchak is the African Burial Ground, located in Lower Manhattan. The monument preserves the remains of several hundred free and enslaved Africans buried in the 17th and 18th centuries. The burial ground was forgotten and built over in subsequent centuries, only to resurface in 1991 as a result of construction excavations. A monument and visitor center now honor the memories of the interred. (The African Burial Ground does not charge admission, but will be closed on Veterans Day.)

Nicodemus National Historic Site, Kansas. Billed by the Park Service as "the oldest and only remaining all Black Town west of the Mississippi," Nicodemus was an important outpost for African Americans moving westward after the Civil War. The historical site in Kansas is comprised of several historic buildings within the still--living community of modern Nicodemus. The town also hosts historical festivals at points throughout the year.

Hamilton Grange, New York. Many of the Park Service's most popular monuments are dedicated to familiar figures of American history. Abraham Lincoln's three memorials alone attracted over six million visitors in 2010 -- a far cry from the New York City home of Alexander Hamilton, which received only around fifteen thousand visitors a year before closing for renovations in 2006. Hamilton Grange was reopened in September and is now accepting visitors -- and at no charge. If Hamilton holds no interest for you, try another of the lesser-visited memorials dedicated to important Americans: the Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site in Brookline, Massachusetts, celebrates the life of the renowned landscape architect; the Flat Rock, North Carolina Carl Sandburg Home remembers the storied career of the quintessentially American poet; and in Washington D.C., the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House stands in remembrance of the early, determined civil rights activist and educator.

America's 10 worst airports

Individual airlines take a lot of the heat when it comes to flight delays, but the airports you fly into, out of, and connect through also have a significant impact on the likelihood you'll get to your destination on time.

Travel + Leisure profiled the most recent best and worst airports for flight delays in a photo gallery. Of note is that even at Seattle's Sea-Tac Airport, this year's best airport for on-time performance, 13.1 percent of flights were delayed. Still, that's better than the worst airport for delays, Chicago Midway, which weighed in with nearly 30 percent of its flights delayed.

The gallery also helpfully outlines the best and worst times of day to fly out of each airport. The theme that emerges reinforces the rule of thumb that flying early is better. Really early in some cases—at Chicago O'Hare, the best time to fly on time is before 7 a.m.

In a number of cases, cities have airports on both the worst and the best list. For instance, Washington, D.C.'s BWI airport is the second worst airport for delays in the country, but Dulles International and Reagan International were both in the top five best for on-time performance.

The New Boeing 787..Built to change the game!

Boeing's new 787 finally carried its first passengers, and the aviation industry has called the 787 a "game changer" aircraft. In many ways it is. It's the first big jet to be built substantially out of composites rather than aluminum. It uses the latest, most fuel-efficient engines, featuring less noise and fewer emissions than current engines. Although smaller than the 777, the 787 has (or will have) an extremely long range. And Boeing claims some important innovations in passenger comfort.

But what part of the "game" changes for you as a passenger? Presumably, the most important gain will be in the airlines' ability to fly economically on routes that will allow you to bypass major hubs and avoid connections—routes with less direct traffic than airlines can efficiently serve with the larger 747s, 777s, A340s, and A380s they now use for long-haul flights. The 787 is about the same sized as a 767, but it can fly much farther—and at much lower cost per passenger. That means nonstop services from second-level U.S. cities to major worldwide hubs, and from large U.S. cities to second-level cities in Europe and Asia. Typical routes might include Boston-Zurich, Portland-London, and Kansas City-Tokyo. Clearly, the ability to avoid one or even two connections on a long international flight could be a major advantage, shaving two to five hours off the best connecting schedules.

Boeing also claims some advantages in the cabin environment: The 787 is pressurized to a lower altitude (6,000 feet) than most other jets, so you won't have so much ear-popping. It will provide higher-humidity cabin air, which means less dry skin and fewer nasal problems. Windows are larger than on current jets, and dimming will be electronic rather than fabric shades. And Boeing makes extravagant claims about how its LED lighting system will be able to adjust to your mood—raising the question about just what sort of lighting is appropriate for a delayed flight.

As to the seating, that depends on how each individual airline decides to outfit its planes. ANA, the first airline to take delivery and fly the 787, has arranged economy seating at eight-across, in a 2-4-2 arrangement, similar to the way most airlines configure their A330/340s. Because the 787 cabin is 15 inches wider than those Airbus models, its economy seats should be roomier—and much better than you find on 747s. Some lines, however, will install seats at nine-across, which will be as narrow and undersized as current 737 and 747 seats and far too tight to accommodate American men comfortably.

Where will you be able to fly 787s? The 787s combination of size and range means you'll see it mainly on international routes, at least at the beginning. In fact, Boeing dropped an early design it had once offered for short-haul service. Currently, Boeing has just under 800 orders for the 787, mostly from overseas or from leasing companies. The deliveries scheduled for this year are to ANA (already flying) and JAL; North American airlines to order the 787 are Air Canada, Continental/United, and Delta, but none of these lines will take delivery until next year at the earliest.

If you've followed the industry reports at all, you know that the 787 is several years behind schedule. Also, the first models are a bit overweight, meaning Boeing still has some design tweaking to do. As a result, Boeing has lost much of the initial advantage it enjoyed over the rival A350, which also uses some of the same technology as the 787. The competitive battle will be fierce for years.

Will the 787s 20 percent reduction in operating cost translate to lower fares? Probably not, at least none that you might identify. But the lower costs should help avoid fare increases that will almost surely be the norm for several years.

Norwegian Gem Rescues Five from Sailboat in North Atlantic

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Gem rescued five people from a sinking sailboat in the North Atlantic Ocean on Oct. 29. The cruise ship responded to a call from the U.S. Coast Guard, which had received a distress notification from Sanctuary, a 39-foot sailboat, stating that it had large breaking waves over the bow, had lost power and its life raft, and was taking on water. Sanctuary was located approximately 350 nautical miles from New York in the North Atlantic, two hours away from Norwegian Gem, the closest vessel in the area. Norwegian Gem Capt. Hakan Svedung immediately diverted course to rescue the four men and one woman aboard.

Upon reaching the Sanctuary, Norwegian Gem encountered extreme weather conditions with wind force up to 40 knots and large swells, making it challenging to launch the ship’s rescue boat. Once in the water, the rescue boat made contact with the sailboat and quickly transferred the five occupants, who are Canadians.

At approximately 2 p.m., the sailboat passengers and rescue team were all safely aboard Norwegian Gem. The ship, which was returning from Bermuda, continued on its route back to New York. “This rescue operation was conducted under extremely difficult circumstances,” Svedung said. “I am proud of our crew who braved their lives to rescue the five people in distress

Snow in October

When winter's white mixes with autumn's orange and gold, nature gets ugly.

A freak October nor'easter knocked out power to more than 3 million homes and businesses across the Northeast on Sunday in large part because leaves still on the trees caught more snow, overloading branches that snapped and wreaked havoc. Close to 2 feet of snow fell in some areas over the weekend, and it was particularly wet and heavy, making the storm even more damaging.

"You just have absolute tree carnage with this heavy snow just straining the branches," said National Weather Service spokesman Chris Vaccaro.

From Maryland to Maine, officials said it would take days to restore electricity, even though the snow ended Sunday.

The storm smashed record snowfall totals for October and worsened as it moved north. Communities in western Massachusetts were among the hardest hit. Snowfall totals topped 27 inches in Plainfield, and nearby Windsor had gotten 26 inches by early Sunday.

It was blamed for at least 11 deaths, and states of emergency were declared in New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and parts of New York.

Roads, rails and airline flights were knocked out, and passengers on a JetBlue flight were stuck on a plane in Hartford, Conn., for more than seven hours. And while children across the region were thrilled to see snow so early, it also complicated many of their Halloween plans.

Sharon Martovich of Southbury, Conn., said she hoped the power will come back on in time for her husband's Halloween tradition of playing "Young Frankenstein" on a giant screen in front of their house. But no matter what, she said, they will make sure the eight or so children who live in the neighborhood don't miss out on trick-or-treating.

"Either way we will get the giant flashlights and we will go," she said.

More than 800,000 power customers were without electricity in Connecticut alone — shattering the record set just two months ago by Hurricane Irene. Massachusetts had more than 600,000 outages, and so did New Jersey — including Gov. Chris Christie's house. Parts of Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, New York, Maine, Maryland and Vermont also were without power.

"It's going to be a more difficult situation than we experienced in Irene," Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said. "We are expecting extensive and long-term power outages."

Thirty-two shelters were open around the state, and Malloy asked volunteer fire departments to allow people in for warmth and showers. At least four hospitals were relying on generators for power.

Around Newtown in western Connecticut, trees were so laden with snow on some back roads that the branches touched the street. Every few minutes, a snap filled the air as one broke and tumbled down. Roads that were plowed became impassible because the trees were falling so fast.

One of the few businesses open in the area was a Big Y grocery store that had a generator. Customers loaded up on supplies, heard news updates over the intercom, charged up their cell phones, and waited for a suddenly hard-to-get cup of coffee — in a line that was 30 people deep and growing.

Many of the areas hit by the storm had also been hit by Irene. In New Jersey's Hamilton Township, Tom Jacobsen also recalled heavy spring flooding and a particularly heavy winter before that.

"I'm starting to think we really ticked off Mother Nature somehow, because we've been getting spanked by her for about a year now," he said while grabbing some coffee at a convenience store.

It wasn't just the trees that weren't ready for a wintry wallop.

Kerry McNiven said she was "totally unprepared" for the storm that knocked out her water and power and sent tree limbs crashing into her Simsbury, Conn., home. She was buying disposable plates and cups in a darkened supermarket, a setting that she said resembled "one of those post-apocalyptic TV shows."

"They didn't hype this one as much" as Irene, she said. "I didn't think it was going to be as bad."

Airlines Gear Up for Cuba Flights

This January, the White House announced new rules that loosened the Cuba travel ban to allow more academic, cultural, and religious exchanges. Under the new rules, institutions of higher learning and religious organizations can sponsor travel to Cuba, and U.S. airports can apply to provide services to licensed charters.

Since then, travel companies such as Insight Cuba, Friendly Planet Cuba, and National Geographic Expeditions have acquired licenses to operate guided trips to Cuba. Trips have a strong cultural focus and are, at least for now, still relatively pricey. But for the first time in a long time, Cuba is a legal option for curious American travelers.

That's the backdrop for major U.S. airlines expanding charter service to the island. According to a Wall Street Journal article cited in USA Today, American, Delta, JetBlue, and United-Continental will be operating about 25 weekly charter flights to Cuba by the end of the year. Charter companies estimate "about 400,000 Americans will fly to Cuba this year vs. 250,000 last year." Presumably, as more tour operators gain licenses to offer Cuba trips in 2012 and beyond, that number will continue its sharp rise.

And as demand rises, airlines and tour providers aren't the only ones looking to get in on the action. Airports in cities including New Orleans and Key West are seeking approval to offer flights to and from Cuba, so they'll be ready when airlines come looking for more departure cities from which to offer service.

Hurricane Rina Forces Changes to Cruise Itineraries

As Hurricane Rina continues to strengthen and a hurricane warning was issued for part of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, Carnival Cruise Line changed itineraries for eight ships and Celebrity Cruises changed the itinerary for Celebrity Millennium. On the morning of Oct. 25, the storm was about 305 miles southeast of Tulum, Mexico with sustained winds of 105 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Instead of calling at Grand Cayman on Oct. 25 and spending Oct. 26 at sea, Celebrity Millennium will spend today at sea and call on Nassau tomorrow.

Carnival Freedom, which departed Fort Lauderdale on Oct. 22, will visit Montego Bay on Oct. 26 and Grand Turk on Oct. 28 instead of Limon, Costa Rica, and Colon, Panama. Carnival Inspiration, which departed Tampa on Oct. 22, visited Cozumel on Oct. 24 and Progreso on Oct. 25 instead of Grand Cayman and Cozumel. Carnival Destiny, which departed Miami on Oct. 22, was at sea today instead of calling at Grand Cayman and will visit Nassau on Oct. 26 instead of spending the day at sea. LegoLand Florida- Now Open!

Kids fish from the Pensacola Beach Gulf Pier while hip adults sun themselves in South Beach, including one who is bright red from too much sun. There are seagulls and crabs, beach bikes and mini-golf, a historic Florida fort, Miami's Little Havana and the State Capitol in Tallahassee, the Daytona International Speedway, the Kennedy Space Center, and even a mermaid.

Welcome to Florida and the brand-new LEGOLAND Florida, the largest LEGOLAND in the world, Now Open, in Winterhaven (45 minutes west of Orlando and a 45-minute drive east from Tampa) on property that once housed Cypress Gardens. The entire state of Florida made out of LEGO bricks. It's the centerpiece of the park's Miniland USA that took 20 million LEGO bricks to complete.

Walk down the Las Vegas strip complete with mini wedding chapels and real Vegas sounds, see the Obamas and their dog standing in front of the White House, watch the yellow taxis navigate Times Square or survey San Francisco's famous Golden Gate Bridge—all built from LEGO bricks. Let's not forget what's sure to be the biggest crowd-pleaser: pirates, an entire pirate village (yes, there is a battle going on, complete with some hapless fellows who've already fallen prey to the hangman's noose).

Not only are you and your kids guaranteed to see something new every time you walk through here, but what separates LEGOLAND Florida from others is that throughout the entire 150-acre park you and your kids make things happen at each of the rides and attractions.

"This isn't passive entertainment," promises Bill Vollbrecht, the LEGOLAND Parks designer who walked me through just before opening. "Kids aren't just being entertained here. They are part of the process."

Think racing LEGO brick cars at the Daytona International Speedway, building a LEGO car you can test on a digitally themed track in the Imagination Zone. Toddlers can join the Junior Fire Brigade and extinguish "flames," get up close and personal with DUPLO farm animals and take over a mini town built just for them.

Preschoolers captain their own mini boats and drive cars while entire families compete with one another in fire and police vehicles to put out a "fire" or catch "robbers" at the LEGO City Rescue Academy. There's even an AQUAZONE Wave Racers ride where riders zip in and out of waves while dodging kid-powered water blasters.

Ride through the Safari Trek where a life-sized LEGO lion will roar, an elephant will spray water and a hippo will open his mouth wide.

At LEGOLAND, the beautiful cypress trees and botanical gardens (including the immense and signature banyan tree planted as a seedling in 1939) have been preserved, with some 660 trees replanted and tons of concrete reused. Some of Cypress Garden's attractions have also been repurposed in the new park, including the signature water ski show on Lake Eloise that premieres as the Pirates' Cove water stunt show at Pirates' Cove. Here, guests are invited to become part of the action (think shooting water cannons).

Any parent of a middle-schooler, meanwhile, knows that LEGOS have become cool again, and LEGOLAND Florida won't disappoint that crowd either—not with Imagination Zone that emphasizes creativity. (The entrance includes a LEGO replica of Albert Einstein's head.) Here you'll get the chance to build MINDSTORMS robots, build a theme park ride using gears to alter speed or go on a mission to "save lives" with "Dr. Heartbeat" and other NXT-bots by using a computer, sensors and motors.

In fact, there are seven educational programs incorporating science, technology and math that meet Florida's Next Generation Sunshine State Standards.

Kids might also learn a lesson about eating healthier, too. Great efforts have been made by Executive Chef Robert Sit to provide fresher and more innovative options, many of which come from local producers. Kids will get fruit, milk or water with their meals, salads and stir-fry dishes will be prepared as you watch and there will be rotisserie chicken, yogurt-granola parfaits and even roasted salmon—all for under $10, considerably less for kids. "I think people will be pleasantly surprised," says Chef Sit.

There's also the largest LEGO store in the world, the chance to make a tiny LEGO person who looks like you and even an opportunity to introduce your kids to their first "thrill" ride with four junior coasters, including the Dragon Coaster in the park's LEGO Kingdoms Zone, behind the scenes in the enchanted castle and the Coastersaurus, a wooden coaster that winds its way around a life-sized LEGO brick dinosaur. (Parents and grandparents who visited Cypress Gardens as kids may remember the wooden coaster as the Triple Hurricane.)

"If we make a coaster young kids can't ride, we've failed," said Vollbrecht, adding the entire park is designed to be completely accessible for those with special challenges.

"The LEGO models here show what's possible to do with LEGO bricks," he says. "Kids will recognize pieces they have at home and start thinking what they could build themselves."

New Security Initiative Raises Many Questions

PreCheck is the Transportation Security Agency's name for its pilot trusted traveler program. The basic idea is simple, and has been around a long time: Instead of treating everyone the same, concentrate on the more likely risks and go easy on the low risks. The government is already doing that for some travelers in some systems; now, TSA says it's ready to tackle airport screening. The idea makes sense and is doable, but TSA is starting out very timidly—too timidly for many of us.

In practice, the system is supposed to work something like this:

You indicate your interest in joining (or, in the beginning, an airline nominates you).
You then undergo a rigorous background check akin to a security clearance.
If accepted, you register some sort of biometric ID—as yet to be determined—that cannot be counterfeited or duplicated.
You get some sort of ID, most likely a smart card.
At a participating airport, you use your ID card and possible biometric test to verify your identity, and if (presumably when) you pass the screen, you bypass some or all of the usual security screening procedures.

PreCheck is starting out on a very limited basis. American and Delta, along with TSA, will select a few thousand very frequent flyers to participate in the test. The test will also be available to travelers enrolled in the existing Customs and Border Protection trusted-traveler Global Entry, Nexus, and Sentri programs when they fly on American or Delta. For the pilot study, facilities will be installed at four airports: Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas-Ft. Worth, and Miami. If the test is successful, TSA says it will expand to other airlines as well as airports that participate in the Global Entry program—currently, that's 20 of the largest domestic international arrival airports.

A lot of the details are still unclear, however, and we don't yet have answers to some big questions:

Just how much of the airport screening process will PreCheck actually bypass? That's obviously the top issue. TSA says, "Eligible passengers may be referred to a lane where they will experience expedited screening. TSA will always incorporate random and unpredictable security measures throughout the airport and no individual will be guaranteed expedited screening." According to some reports, you'll still have to pass through the metal detectors or X-ray machines, and apparently TSA will retain the three-ounce liquid and other carry-on limits.
Will PreCheck ever be available to ordinary leisure travelers, and if so, when?
Will PreCheck ever be available at hundreds of smaller airports, and if so, when?
How will PreCheck integrate with existing programs? Global Entry applies to customs and immigration screening, not security. The existing privately operated Clear Registered Traveler Program, and a few smaller programs previously operated similar security screening programs at 21 airports—including only a few overlaps with Global Entry—are currently on hold.
What will it cost? TSA hasn't said anything about cost. The Clear program costs $179 per year, and Global Entry charges an application fee of $100.
How can I apply for PreCheck enrollment? For now, you can't; entry is by invitation only ("Don't call us; we'll call you.")

Presumably at some point, applications will be available. If you don't get an invitation, however, you might be able to get in the back door by registering for Global Entry. At least one premium credit card—AmEx Platinum—is offering to cover the cost of membership for cardholders, and you may see similar promotions from other sources.

All in all, as TSA says, so far PreCheck is in a very early stage of development. Probably, as the agency and travelers develop some experience, it will be available to broader segments of the travel market.

Meanwhile, unless you're a frequent American or Delta flyer through four airports, you shouldn't figure on avoiding the screening hassles anytime soon. At best, you can hope for future relief before you get too old to enjoy it.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Breakaway to Homeport in New York City

Norwegian Cruise Line’s new 4,000-passenger Norwegian Breakaway will make New York City its year-round home port starting in May 2013. The Breakaway -- which will be the largest ship ever to homeport in the city -- will replace Norwegian Star and embark on a minimum of 88 cruises from the Manhattan Cruise Terminal through March 31, 2015. The ship will offer cruises to Bermuda.

The move will bring about 140,000 additional embarking passengers into New York City over two years, resulting in an estimated $35 million in additional direct spending. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Norwegian Cruise Line CEO Kevin Sheehan made the announcement on Thursday, Oct. 6 in the Manhattan Cruise Terminal. Also attending were New York City Economic Development Corporation President Seth W. Pinsky and NYC & Co CEO George Fertitta.

Norwegian also announced that pop icon and artist Peter Max has been commissioned to paint the signature hull artwork for Breakaway. This is the first time Norwegian has asked a well-known artist to paint the hull artwork on one of its ships.

Norwegian Cruise Line was the first cruise line to homeport year-round in New York City beginning in 2003. Since then, the company has brought its newest and largest ships to the Big Apple, with two ships calling in New York City since 2005. In 2013 alone, Norwegian Breakaway is expected to make 34 calls at Manhattan Cruise Terminal (MCT). In addition, Norwegian Gem will continue to call year-round at MCT, with an expected 47 calls, and Norwegian Star will make 15 calls in 2013 before being replaced. In total, Norwegian Cruise Line ships will bring approximately 285,000 embarking passengers into New York City in 2013, generating approximately $70 million in direct spending in the city.

Currently under construction at Meyer Werft in Germany, Norwegian Breakaway will be 144,017 gross tons and is scheduled for delivery in April 2013. Following inaugural events, the ship will sail 22 seven-day cruises from New York to Bermuda beginning May 12 through Oct. 6, 2013. Departing on Sundays, the ship will spend three days in Bermuda, along with three days at sea.

Norwegian Breakaway’s New York-to-Bermuda cruises are scheduled to go on sale to Latitudes members, Norwegian’s frequent guests, on Oct. 14, 2011, and to the public on Oct. 17, 2011. Also, as part of its Partners First commitment, Norwegian will open Norwegian Breakaway’s sailings for group block bookings exclusively for travel partners on Oct. 10, 2011. Hurricane Jova Forces More Cruise Ship Itinerary Changes

As Hurricane Jova neared the Mexico coast, a few more cruise ships changed itineraries to avoid the brunt of the storm. Carnival Cruise Lines said the Carnival Splendour, which departed Los Angeles on Oct. 9, will visit La Paz on Oct. 13 instead of Puerto Vallarta.

Holland America Line said Oosterdam’s itinerary has also been revised. The changes apply to both the 11-day cruise that departed Vancouver on Oct. 4 and the seven-day cruise that departed San Diego on Oct. 8. On Oct. 9, a call to Avalon, Catalina Island, was added in place of a day at sea. On Oct. 10, the ship sailed at sea in place of scenic cruising in Bahia Magdalena. On Oct. 11, the ship had a day at sea instead of an overnight port call to Puerto Vallarta, followed by a call to Pichilingue (La Paz) on Oct. 13 in place of the second day in Puerto Vallarta. The remainder of the itinerary is as originally scheduled, with a call to Cabo San Lucas on Oct. 13 and a day at sea Oct. 14.

Disney Cruise Line said the Disney Wonder’s Oct. 9 itinerary replaced a call in Puerto Vallarta on Oct. 12 with Cabo San Lucas on Oct. 11 and Oct. 12, followed by a call in Ensenada on Oct. 15.

Meanwhile, the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board announced that the destination “is under no immediate threat” as Hurricane Jova touches down on Mexico’s Pacific Coast. The board said the National Hurricane Center expects that the hurricane will touch ground between the border of the states of Jalisco and Colima, 119 miles from the city. Local government officials have taken numerous preventive measures to ensure the safety of its local population and visitors.

Brooklyn Bridge
Where: East River, Park Row, Manhattan to Adams Street, Brooklyn, NY
In the early 1800s, the residents of Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan discussed the idea of a bridge to link the 2 cities together -- allowing people and goods to easily cross the East River. After multiple attempts to get something underway, John Roebling, a bridge designer, proposed a suspension bridge in 1855. Believe it or not, he actually designed the bridge hoping that it would be perceived as a great work of art one day. The proposal was approved 2 years later and work began on Jan. 3, 1870. Roebling had since passed away, so his son, Washington, took over as chief engineer of the project with help from his wife, Emily. Even before it opened in 1883, the bridge was seen as a symbol of greatness in New York, but folks across America were also mesmerized by the size and ingenuity of the project. Today, the bridge is a National Historic Landmark and still has the 44th longest main span among the world's suspension bridges.

Empire State Building
Where: 350 5th Avenue, New York, NY
Built during the Depression, the Empire State Building is a work of determination and pride both in New York and U.S. history. It all started when the Chrysler Corporation and General Motors were in competition to build the tallest building. Architect William Lamb was chosen to design the building and construction began in March 1930. By October that same year, 88 floors were finished with just 14 left to go. Workers were able to maintain this speedy construction pace since the posts, beams and windows were made in factories and then brought in by train to be put up on site. During the time the building was built, there was much talk among New Yorkers and Americans across the country about the incredible speed at which the building was being constructed, as well as weekly updates and stories about the men who built it. The Empire State Building is also a National Historic Landmark.

Golden Gate Bridge
Where: Located on US Highway 101 in San Francisco, CA
Millions of visitors each year flock to San Francisco for warmer weather, unique attractions and to see the Golden Gate Bridge. It was Joseph Strauss who submitted final plans for the bridge in 1930. The 6 counties involved with the bridge approved the $35 million project, and on Jan. 5, 1933, construction began. Just a few short years later, in 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge welcomed its first visitor. To everyone's surprise, it opened ahead of schedule and under budget. Since then, the bridge has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades, such as the first non-building structure to receive the "Distinguished Building Award" from the Society of American Registered Architects. The bridge can also be found on a commemorative stamp unveiled in 1998 by the United States Postal Service.

Hoover Dam
Where: The dam is located 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas on US Highway 93 at the Nevada-Arizona border.
It took over 60 years from the time Maj. John Wesley Powell began to conduct geological studies of the Colorado River in 1869, to the concrete being poured in 1933, for Hoover Dam to be materialized. During this time the 7 basin states had to go through lengthy negotiations on how the water would be distributed, and of course, there were bidding wars on what construction company would get the job. In the end, a group called Six Companies was awarded the contract -- the winning bid was over $48 million. Despite the long years of bids, planning, site inspections and more, it took just five years to complete the mammoth structure. Today, the dam is a testament to the dedication of the country's ability to construct such a structure, especially during the years of the Depression. Hoover Dam is also a National Historic Landmark.

Mount Rushmore
Where: The Black Hills of South Dakota, along Highway 244
The location of Mount Rushmore was once property of the Sioux, including an area called the Black Hills. But once gold was discovered there, prospectors soon displaced the Sioux and began building mining camps. In 1885, an American businessman named Charles Rushmore paid a visit to the Black Hills to check on some titles to properties for a mining company. It was a few years later, after winning over the hearts of the miners and prospectors, that the mountain was named in his honor. So how did those faces end up on the rock? Historian Doane Robinson, in 1923, started the process that later turned into the Mount Harney Bill, allowing a monument to be carved. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum arrived two years later to begin the carving. The monument was officially completed on Oct. 31, 1941. Today, Mount Rushmore sees over 2.6 million visitors per year.

Seattle Space Needle
Where: 219 4th Avenue N, Seattle, WA
Designed for the 1962 World's Fair by Edward E. Carlson, this 605-foot-tall structure was to represent the future but quickly became a symbol for the city of Seattle. The structure is designed to withstand winds of 200 miles per hour, but earth tremors and storms have caused the structure to sway occasionally and close for a day or two. Today, the Space Needle is getting a face-lift as the city of Seattle begins to revitalize the entire centerpiece, including the observation deck, restaurant and surrounding grounds.

Washington Monument
Where: 15th Street, SW, Washington, DC
It doesn't matter what part of the world people come from, one sight of this obelisk design and they know they're in America. Similar to other memorials such as the Taj Mahal or the Great Pyramids, the Washington Monument is a celebration of 1 person's life or legacy -- in this case, the life of America's first president, George Washington. Architect Robert Mills won a contest to design the sculpture. It was intended to be the centerpiece of the capital city, symbolizing each state of the Union. Work on the monument began in 1843, and was completed in 1884. It is 555 feet tall and contains over 36,000 blocks.

How to Score a Refund on a Nonrefundable Ticket

Airlines these days seem to tweak their schedules far more often than ever. Too often, I hear from travelers who ticketed what they planned to be a good itinerary only to find that their airline has changed their schedule. Many such schedule changes are innocuous, and you can easily accept such minor glitches as inconvenient departure or arrival times, increased travel time, additional stops, longer layovers, or uncomfortably tight connections. But other times a schedule change can throw your trip entirely out of whack: You can't make the new departure, for example, a later arrival time makes you miss an appointment or connection, the new schedule includes an unacceptable red-eye, or the trip would take far too many hours. Whatever the reason, if you really don't like a new schedule, you can sometimes do something about it.

Airlines change schedules for a variety of reasons—fleet scheduling, changed air traffic situations and such—but increasingly these days, they prune flights because of "excess capacity" on poorly performing routes. Their contracts of carriage all allow them to cancel flights, and generally promise to provide you with two options:

An alternative schedule on their own flights, which they typically book for you automatically.
A complete refund, even on a nonrefundable ticket.

A few lines also offer a third option: transfer to another line, usually limited to an airline with which they have a partnership or interline agreement, rarely to any non-partner line.

If you get caught, your easiest option is to accept the airline's offer unless it's really terrible, especially if you can live with the inconvenience and reschedule any meetings you might miss. In that case, the biggest problem that you'll face—a big issue with some flyers, not so much with others—is that you lose whatever seat assignments you originally had. Although your ticket entitles you to a seat, it doesn't entitle you to a specific seat. And because the airline is moving you to flights that already have bookings, your chances of ending up in middle seats and/or separated from a traveling companion are pretty high. In that case, you just have to figure "kismet" and maybe try to fix your seat assignments at departure time.

But all too often, the airline's new schedule will not work for you, for the reasons mentioned or others. In that case, my suggestion is that you go online and work out what would be acceptable to you, call the airline's reservation agent (you really can't do this online), and give the agent your preferred option. That approach works best when you confine your alternative schedule search to the original line. If you can't do that, expand your search to partner lines: you can identify them by looking at your original line's frequent flyer program pages. If that doesn't work, you can certainly try a non-partner airline, but your chances then get pretty slim.

If your original line can't or won't provide an acceptable itinerary, your only remaining option is to ask for a refund and start the booking process over again. That way, you can try for the best possible itinerary available at the time. Unfortunately, however, rebooking might require you to pay a higher fare—maybe even a much higher fare, depending on circumstances. But if that's the only way you can complete your trip, go for it.

How about that possible "blessing" in the above headline? If, for some reason, you have nonrefundable tickets for a trip you really want to cancel, a schedule change gives you the perfect opportunity to bail out without penalty or loss. One frequent traveler I know has done that twice this year already.

Although airlines try to notify you if your schedule changes, I often hear from flyers who missed their flights because they were reassigned to an earlier departure and didn't know about it. Especially if you ticket well in advance, always check with the airline to make sure it has no nasty surprises in store for you.

Hyatt Workers Strike in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu

Thousands of Hyatt hotel workers in four U.S. cities -- Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Honolulu -- have launched week-long strikes, according to Unite Here, the workers’ union. According to a statement issued by Unite Here, Hyatt has replaced career housekeepers with minimum wage temporary workers and imposed dangerous workloads on those housekeepers who remain.

In July, Hyatt reportedly turned heat lamps on striking workers in Chicago during a heat wave. In Boston, Hyatt fired its entire housekeeping staff at three non-union hotels, replacing women who had worked at Hyatt for decades with temporary workers earning minimum wage, according to the union.

Hyatt workers have called for boycotts at 17 Hyatt properties and have led dozens of public demonstrations all across North America. “Hyatt workers are waging a crucial struggle,” said John Wilhelm, president of Unite Here, a union representing 250,000 hotel and other hospitality workers throughout North America.

Contracts for striking workers in Chicago and San Francisco expired in August 2009, in Los Angeles in November 2009, and in Honolulu in June 2010. Workers in each of these cities have reached agreements with other major hotel companies, such as Hilton and Starwood, according to the union This week's strike affects approximately 3,000 unionized hotel workers at six hotel properties across North America, including the largest Hyatt property in the world, the Hyatt Regency Chicago. Amtrak Warns Republican-Backed Budget Plan Will Eliminate Service

Amtrak is warning that a Republican-backed budget plan in Congress will eliminate rail service. Despite record-breaking Amtrak ridership and strong support for intercity passenger rail by 15 states, Amtrak said, the House Republican transportation budget plan will effectively eliminate all state-supported Amtrak service across the country for the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1.

The FY 2012 Transportation-HUD House Appropriations Subcommittee budget proposal offered by the Republican majority in the House prohibits the use of federal funds provided to Amtrak to fund any operating costs of state-supported trains. If enacted by the full Congress, Amtrak said the measure would eliminate nearly 150 weekday state-supported trains and negatively impact the more than nine million passengers who ride those trains each year and the communities they live in.

“The House Republican plan is shortsighted and is the wrong policy for America,” said Amtrak President and CEO Joseph Boardman. “It will result in the loss of jobs and reverses significant progress made to use passenger rail to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil.”

“The GOP plan penalizes states that have made investments in passenger rail, some of which have contributed toward costs for nearly 40 years,” said Amtrak Chairman Tom Carper. “It kills an engine of local and regional economic growth much needed today, harms the future economic vitality of the nation and is unnecessary.”

Under legislation passed by Congress in 2008, Amtrak is working cooperatively with its state partners to develop a common methodology to shift more of the operating and capital costs of state-supported trains to the states. “The Republican proposal forces an unwelcome decision on states who clearly want to preserve and expand passenger rail service,” Carper said. The 15 states which provide state-supported Amtrak service are: California, Illinois, Maine, Michigan, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

Google is reportedly buying Zagat, the popular restaurant review guides, in a deal apparently aimed at getting more local restaurant and travel content. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. News of Google’s acquisition was posted on Zagat’s website and in a blog by a top Google executive. “We are writing to share the most exciting news in our 32 years in business. Zagat Survey has been acquired by another great company, Google,” write Nina and Tim Zagat, owners of Zagat.

Marissa Mayer, Google’s top executive for local and location services, wrote that Zagat would become the cornerstone for the search giant’s local offerings. “Their iconic pocket-sized guides with paragraphs summarizing and ‘snippeting’ sentiment were ‘mobile’ before ‘mobile’ involved electronics,” she said.

The Zagats said that after spending time with Google senior management discussing mutual goals, “we know they share our belief in user-generated content and our commitment to accuracy and fairness in providing users with the information needed to make smart decisions about where to eat, shop and travel. We believe this union is the right next step for our employees, our users and for our business, all of which will benefit from the additional resources and reach that Google provides. Going forward, we will remain active in the business as co-chairs, helping to ensure that the combination of Zagat's and Google's assets and capabilities will maximize our product quality and growth.”

Beyond restaurant reviews for cities across the U.S. and the rest of the world, Zagat also has user-generated review guides for hotels, resorts and spas (for the U.S. and the World); golf courses; Disneyland and Walt Disney World resorts; and Los Angeles and New York City nightlife. Google in 2009 reportedly tried to buy at least one Zagat competitor, Yelp, in a deal said to be worth $500. It then developed Places, a Yelp-like listing for local businesses reviewed by individual consumers.

TripAdvisor's Top 10 U.S. water parks

TripAdvisor's list of its Top 10 U.S. water parks reminds us that the genre has definitely evolved from the days of a few slides, a lazy river and (maybe) a wave pool.

Regardless, we’ll cut the nostalgia and get right to the chase, as summer is past its halfway point and a solid splashdown couldn’t come soon enough.

Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari topped the list (which TripAdvisor said was "the top ten water parks in the U.S., according to TripAdvisor travelers"). Its featured attractions include the Wildebeest, which at a third of a mile long is the world’s longest water coaster. And ZOOMbabwe, at almost 900 feet long, is the world’s biggest enclosed waterslide. The park’s in Santa Claus, Ind., which is about 75 miles west of Louisville, Ky.

Orlando’s Typhoon Lagoon came in at No. 2 for its surf lessons; the 2,000-foot-long Castaway Creek, which allows visitors to literally float around the park; and massive “Shark Reef," complete with tropical fish and -- gulp -- sharks.

Wisconsin’s Noah’s Ark Water Park, which at 49 rides and multiple wave pools and rivers is the largest in the U.S., was the third most-popular waterpark, especially for those willing to brave the park’s near-looping waterslide.

Morey’s Piers in Wildwood, N.J., combines two water parks with a beachfront location, while Kahuna Laguna, nestled in the mountains of North Conway, N.H., is an all indoor-attraction, giving visitors an 82-degree environment regardless of whether it’s 100 degrees or minus 10 outside.

National Geographic launching Cuba Tours in November

National Geographic Expeditions will launch its people-to-people tours in Cuba in November.

National Geographic received its Cuba travel license from the U.S. Treasury Department on Aug. 23. Operators must run educational tours in which participants interact with locals.

“Cuba: Discovering Its People and Culture” is a 10-day tour departing Miami on Nov. 26; Dec. 10, 24; Jan. 7, 21; Feb. 4, 18; March 10, 24; April 7, 21; and May 12.

Lynn Cutter, National Geographic’s senior vice president of travel and business development, said, “We’ve tapped into National Geographic’s network of experts and resources in Cuba to craft an exciting, immersive program that provides a true insider’s perspective and an interactive dialogue through encounters with local Cubans.”

Each departure will be led by a National Geographic expert who will serve as an ambassador between the travelers and the Cubans.

Author and travel photographer Christopher Baker will lead the first tour and several other departures. Author Tom Miller and Elizabeth Newhouse (former National Geographic editor and consultant with the Center for International Policy’s Cuba Project in Washington) also will head up departures.

The tour is $4,995 per person, double (add $560 for single travelers). Air to Miami and charter air to Havana are extra.

The itinerary includes Unesco World Heritage sites of Old Havana and Trinidad; a trip to the Bay of Pigs with Cuban veterans from the 1961 invasion; attendance at music and dance performances; and visits to local farms, parks, fishing villages, homes, schools, street parties, cathedrals, art studios and Hemingway’s rural home Finca Vigia.

Abercrombie & Kent on Monday said it was canceling its new Cuba program after reviewing a clarification on new Cuba travel regulations issued by the Treasury Department.

Day 2 — Havana

Explore Old Havana and discover its beautiful Spanish colonial architecture. Learn about the challenges facing Havana as it struggles to preserve its architectural and cultural heritage in a period of great economic change. On the main commercial street, meet some of Cuba’s cuentapropistas (self-employed), who are part of an expanding private sector. After lunch, enjoy a talk with experts from the Old Havana restoration project. Later, following a presentation on the role of tobacco in Cuban history, watch the intricate work of torcedores, or cigar rollers, at the famous Partagás cigar factory, followed by a discussion with a few of the rollers about their work. Soak up the atmosphere in Parque Central, where baseball fans engage in debates while domino players duel beneath palm trees. Attend a talk on Cuban religion in its many forms—from Catholicism to Judaism to Santería—and then visit the cathedral of San Cristóbal with a remarkable baroque facade that Cuban novelist Alejo Carpentier described as “music turned to stone.”

Day 3 — Havana/Cojímar

Begin the day with a presentation on Cuba’s current political and economic landscape. Afterward, set out for Ernest Hemingway’s hilltop home, Finca Vigía, now a museum. Meet with a curator to discuss the author’s enduring legacy in Cuba, followed by a reading of some of his iconic works. Then travel to the seaside village of Cojímar, the setting for the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Old Man and the Sea. Here, meet local fishermen and environmentalists who will discuss conservation measures to protect Cuba’s marine wildlife, including sea turtles. Have lunch overlooking the harbor where Hemingway’s fishing boat was moored. Later, enjoy a talk on Hemingway’s reaction to the 1959 Cuban Revolution and his final departure from Cuba and subsequent death in 1961. Then visit Hotel Ambos Mundos in Old Havana where the author’s room is maintained as a museum. Finish off the day at El Floridita, another Hemingway haunt that provides a unique window into his life in Cuba.

Day 4 — Pinar del Río/Viñales

Travel into the Pinar del Río Province and Viñales valley, known for its emerald tobacco fields. Visit the legendary tobacco farm of the Robaina family and witness firsthand the cultivation of Cuba’s legendary crop. Meet and talk with those who work the farm and learn about Cuba’s rural culture and economy. Later, explore Viñales National Park with rangers and naturalists who will discuss conservation in this forested region. Meet with rural farmers who still use oxen to till their fields. Continue to the lovely town of Viñales, surrounded by striking limestone hills, or mogotes. This evening, attend a talk by our expert on the Bay of Pigs invasion and the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Day 5 — Bay of Pigs/Cienfuegos

Set out for the historic Bay of Pigs. On our way, visit the cave where Ernesto “Che” Guevara was headquartered during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. Explore Playa Girón, the landing site for the 1961 U.S.-backed invasion, and the Playa Giron museum with Cuban veterans, who will share their memories. Engage them directly on the legacy of the Bay of Pigs in Cuba. Continue to Cienfuegos, a port city with architecture that reflects its French colonial roots. This evening, discover the history and Parisian-style boulevards of Cuba’s “pearl of the South.” Meet local residents in Parque Martí and see the statue commemorating José Martí, a renowned author and a leader in Cuba’s quest for independence from Spain.

Day 6 — Cienfuegos

Visit the country’s largest botanical garden with a member of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba, who will talk about Cuba’s efforts to maintain the rich biodiversity of its extraordinary plant life. Then travel into the mountains of the Sierra del Escambray and enjoy lunch at a restored sugar hacienda. Afterward, board a 1906 Baldwin steam train once used to transport sugar cane and journey into the lush Valley of the Sugar Mills, where we’ll learn about the historic yet diminished importance of Cuba’s sugar industry. Meet former sugar workers who have shifted to new agricultural employment in an uncertain economic period, as Cuba attempts to become self-sustaining in food production. Return to Cienfuegos this evening and join in a neighborhood street party where you will have an opportunity to meet Cubans in an informal setting.

Day 7 — Trinidad

Explore Cuba’s best-preserved colonial city with restoration experts. Meander along cobblestone streets past pastel-colored homes and serene plazas. Meet with students at a local art institute, housed in what was once the dragoons’ barracks and discover what fresh contributions young artists are making to Cuba’s shifting cultural landscape. After lunch, meet Julio Muñoz, a local photographer and “horse whisperer” whose wife and niece were featured in an October 1999 National Geographic article. Visit Julio’s colonial-era house and stables, the base for his project in promoting equine care in Cuba. Then join him in visiting a babalawo, a high priest of the Afro-Caribbean religion, Santería.

Day 8 — Havana/Jaimanitas

Return to Havana, stopping for lunch along the way. Attend a musical performance at a local music and dance school and meet the students. Then head to the charming fishing village of Jaimanitas to visit the workshop and home of ceramic artist José Fuster, called the “Picasso of Cuba.” Talk with residents involved in revitalizing the neighborhood with colorful mosaics.

Day 9 — Havana

Take a morning walk through the Vedado neighborhood. Then visit La Plaza de la Revolución and Colon (Columbus) Cemetery, known for its elaborate mausoleums, chapels, and tombstones. Meet pilgrims from across the country at the grave of La Milagrosa (The Miraculous One), a woman who died in childbirth in 1901 and who many Cubans believe has the power to grant good luck. Later, meet local artists at “Salvador’s Alley,” an outdoor multimedia space with vibrant murals, Santería shrines, and rumba performances. Learn how these artists refract the realities of contemporary Cuban life through a variety of media. Toast our new Cuban friends at a farewell dinner tonight.

Travel Agencies vs. Online Bookings

Politicians, searching for everyday examples, often fall victim to the trap in the old adage, "It ain't what you don't know that hurts you, it's what you do know that ain't right." A prominent politico (no name, I'm not into partisan politics, and it happens in both parties) did just that when he tried to illustrate dynamic change by asking, "When was the last time somebody went to a bank teller instead of using an ATM or used a travel agent instead of going online?" As I'm sure lots of folks responded, the answer to both questions is, "I'm doing it as you speak." Bank tellers and travel agents are still around and still providing important services. Although I don't have any great insights about retail banking, I know with some accuracy that travel agency business is doing OK these days.

Probably the first point is that "travel agency instead of online" is what my old debate coach used to call a "false dichotomy:" setting up a situation as "either-or" when the reality is "both." Some of the biggest online travel sellers—Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity, and such, are, in fact, travel agencies themselves, as are the many more specialized online travel sellers. The industry's standard term for them is "online travel agencies," or OTAs. And many travel agencies with local "bricks and mortar" retail offices operate their own websites.

But let's assume that the politician really meant personal visits or calls to an in-person "retail" agent. Even this more limited reference doesn't square with the facts. Lots of you prefer dealing personally with an agent to going online yourself, for several reasons:

Agents can save you time. There's a good chance that you'll be reading this column online, and that you regularly make your travel arrangements online. You've found, then, that ferreting out your best deals often requires a lot of time—maybe many hours—for even a simple trip. That's why some of you prefer one call to a travel agent who can do the ferreting out for you. This service is especially relevant if you're extremely busy or place a very high value on your time.
Agents provide skills you might not find online. Here, I'm not talking so much about personal airline and destination recommendations—you can get more of that online than you can possibly assimilate—but in such specialized areas as assembling custom tours or using airline ticketing tricks for multi-stop international trips that the OTA systems can't incorporate.
Agents can help solve problems. If your flight is canceled or you face some other problem, an agent can probably find a better solution, more quickly, than you could on your own.
Agents provide special services to business travelers. Many businesses find the best way to manage their travel activities and budgets do that is to use a travel agency. Small businesses and individual professionals, especially, find business-oriented agencies to be helpful.

This is not to say that you should all shut down your computers and head for a travel agency. Online is still the best bet for many of you:

Retail travel agent services are no longer "free." Fees range from around $30 for a simple air booking to much more than that for a complicated itinerary.
For a relatively simple itinerary, you can probably find on your own any good deal you could get through a retail agency.
Retail agents often can't or won't use some of your best sources of big discounts, such as Hotwire, Priceline, by-owner vacation rental sites, and flash sale sites. One local agent I know won't book flights on Allegiant because of difficulties when that line cancels a flight.

All in all, if you're skilled, use good information sources, and have the time, you can probably pay less for any given trip than you'd pay through a retail agent. But if you'd rather let someone else go through the hassles—and help you fight a problem—a retail travel agent is nearby and glad to help.

Conquering the Sahara

The Sahara Desert is an ocean of sand roughly 8.5 Million sq. km. spanning North Africa. If you are daring enough to conquer it, you have to deal with about 4,838 kilometers of extreme conditions with the Atlantic Ocean at one end and the Red Sea on the opposite end. Aside from the daunting unearthly amount of sand, you have to overcome dust storms, extreme heat, thirst, and some hostile tribes.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The Flower Power Concert Series is back at the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival this spring. Which means artists involved with hit songs of the 1960s through the '90s will be on stage each Friday-Sunday from March 4 through May 15, 2011.

Collectively, the 11 artists performing this spring at Walt Disney World Resort were involved in 133 Billboard Top 40 hits -- 58 Top 10s including 16 No. 1 chart-toppers.

For the first time, travel agent members of CLIA will be able to use CLIA training and certification programs toward a university degree.

CLIA entered an articulation agreement with the University of Phoenix so that the school will recognize certain CLIA training courses as credits toward a degree.

CLIA agents can transfer credits from 34 CLIA certification and training courses toward elective credits when studying for their associate or bachelor’s degree with the University of Phoenix, the largest for-profit university in North America.

The school has more than 200 locations as well as online programs.

According to the agreement, CLIA credits can even be retroactively used toward a University of Phoenix degree.

Bob Sharak, CLIA’s executive vice president, said that the agreement would "make the industry stronger" and would solidify CLIA’s position as a leader in education.

"We have already positioned ourselves as the leader in education and invested in these programs," he said. "If there are CLIA agents out there who have a desire to pursue an associate’s or bachelor’s degree, and some may already be taking classes at University of Phoenix, we want to make it known to them they have another option and that they can use [CLIA] credits toward bigger goals."

Sharak said the program could encourage agents to pursue further degrees.

"The agents may think, 'I already have this stuff in the bank; it may be worth my while to pursue further education with a tourism degree,' " he said.

Another goal of the program, Sharak said, is to encourage current University of Phoenix students to look at careers in selling travel.

"We are hoping existing students at the University of Phoenix in the tourism school will be interested and avail themselves of this, as well," he said.

Sharak said the program complements programs CLIA already has in higher-education institutions.

'A new generation of travel agents'
CLIA currently offers programs in 15 college and tourism schools called the Associate Cruise Degree in the U.S. and Associate Cruise Program in Canada.

Upon completion, the students earn the CLIA ACD/ACP designation and 80 credits that can be applied to the Accredited Cruise Counsellor Certification upon pursuing a travel sales career.

The CLIA coursework is part of the class curriculum, but the coursework does not earn college credit, per se.

Last year, 500 students at schools like Johnson & Wales University, St. John’s University and the Canadian Tourism College participated.

"Part of what we are trying to do is find a new generation of travel agents with our ongoing programs with colleges, universities and schools," Sharak said. "If young people are pursuing a field in tourism, we want to make them aware of the opportunities in travel sales and selling cruises."

The agreement makes 34 CLIA certification and training courses eligible, both online and in classroom. Programs that did not qualify were mostly product-oriented, such as those about CLIA-member cruise lines and ships.

Deborah Townley, director of workforce solutions for the University of Phoenix, said the agreement is one of hundreds that the school has with corporations and associations around the country, including Royal Caribbean International.

The University of Phoenix has reviewed some of the cruise lines’ internally offered courses and accepts some toward their degrees.

She said the university was attracted to CLIA’s programs because it’s a large association, with 25 cruise line members and more than 10,000 individual agents actively enrolled in its certification.

CLIA currently offers 25 seminars online as well as 20 three-hour and seven 90-minute classroom seminars, delivered locally in more than 150 cities in the U.S. and Canada.

Townley said she had been reaching out individually to the cruise lines prior to finding CLIA. Before reaching an agreement with the group, the University of Phoenix assessed each CLIA course to determine whether it could be used toward accreditation, an eight-week process.

Townley said these programs save students time and money, adding to their ability to pursue degrees.

She said that, typically, 15 hours of learning is worth one credit and that sometimes students can save up to a year in course fees by transferring outside credits in.

"It’s a good incentive for students and the corporations," she said. "We’re helping our students complete their education and save money."

Magical Festivities Salute Chilean Miners as Walt Disney World Resort Honors the Freed Heroes and their Families

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (Jan. 31, 2011) – Magical new memories were embraced today by the rescued Chilean miners as they paraded down Main Street, U.S.A. in grand fanfare at Walt Disney World Resort toward the close of a Disney-sponsored vacation honoring the miners, their rescuers and their families.

Last fall, the world united to celebrate the dramatic rescue of the trapped Chilean miners. Since last Thursday, the miners and their rescuers and families joined in a festive gathering in their honor at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.

Aboard Copa Airlines, the group of nearly 160 Chileans arrived last week in grand style to Orlando International Airport where they received a ceremonial “water salute” by local firefighting vehicles: a dramatic arch of water rising over the tarmac as the airplane passed underneath.

Their summer holiday (seasons are reversed in Chile) included a welcome party Friday hosted by Walt Disney World President Meg Crofton and local dignitaries at The American Adventure pavilion in Epcot. The miners enjoyed a long weekend filled with thrilling attractions, shopping, character hugs and VIP treatment in all four theme parks, creating lasting memories with their families.

One highlight of their six-night vacation to Disney was serving as Grand Marshals of the Main Street, U.S.A. parade Monday in Magic Kingdom. The miners and rescuers were greeted by cheers of guests waving Chilean flags in their honor, Disney characters and entertainers pulling out all the stops and the ‘Mayor’ of Main Street proclaiming their special day. To the accompaniment of “When You Wish Upon a Star” their day was capped by daytime pyrotechnics and streamers in a rainbow of colors of the Chilean flag. Later that evening, they watched Cinderella Castle magically transform during the nighttime spectacle, “The Magic, The Memories, and You!”, a projection spectacular starring images of guests shot earlier in the day in the park.

“These courageous men captivated the world with their story of hope and perseverance,” said Disney President and CEO Bob Iger. “Great stories are at the heart of all we do at The Walt Disney Company and we are pleased that the next chapter in this inspirational story is taking place at Walt Disney World Resort.”

The Chilean miners (31 of the 33 miners were able to make the trip) were scheduled later Monday to share their lessons of hope, courage and pride with about 40 youngsters from local Boys & Girls Clubs.

Trapped 2,300 feet inside the earth for 69 days in a collapsed Chilean mine, the men were pulled from the darkness in a miracle rescue. In one of 2010’s most compelling stories, their unbending faith and endurance sustained them throughout a saga that transfixed the world.

“We are not the heroes,” said Omar Reygada, one of the miners whose comments were translated from Spanish. “Our families and all the people around the world who prayed, wished us well and helped us through our ordeal – those are our real heroes.”

During their Walt Disney World vacation, the miners also will be treated to a keepsake group photo in front of Cinderella Castle and personal photo albums of their visit.

Their departure for home is scheduled for Feb. 2.
